Terms of Business

At Virtue Chambers, the primary terms for accepting instructions are those outlined in version 3.0 of the General Terms and Conditions for the Supply of Legal Services by Barristers to Solicitors in Commercial Matters, commonly referred to as the ‘COMBAR/CLLS Terms.’ These terms are a collaborative agreement between the Commercial Bar Association (COMBAR) and the City of London Law Society (CLLS) on Payment Basis A. For more details, please refer to the Guidance Notes on the COMBAR/CLLS Terms.

Under the Bar’s Code of Conduct, our barristers are also required to accept instructions based on the Bar Council’s Standard Contractual Terms for the Supply of Legal Services by Barristers to Authorised Persons 2012, known as the “Bar Council Standard Terms.”

Some of our barristers may be open to negotiating variations of the COMBAR/CLLS Terms or other alternative terms, including conditional fee agreements.

Barristers at Virtue Chambers are eligible to be instructed by solicitors, qualified foreign lawyers, and certain authorised organisations under the Licensed Access scheme. Additionally, several of our barristers can directly accept instructions from lay clients under specific circumstances. Distinct contractual terms apply to instructions under both the Licensed Access and Direct Access schemes.

Our practice managers are ready to address any questions regarding our barristers’ terms and can provide quotes for work upon request.
